Why do the image functions not work on Linux/Unix?

For using Helma's built-in image functions on a *nix system, either X-Windows or alternatively the Xvfb application is required.

As of Java 1.4, it is possible to run Java applications in headless mode. Running Helma in headless mode, you can use the imaging functionality without running X-Windows or Xvfb. To run Helma in headless mode, simply add the following switch to the Java command line in the Helma start script:

-Djava.awt.headless=true
