indeed, this is a question. but on the other hand: if we do not provide such a feature for helma 1.x it will remain a pretty weak spot in an overall great application server.
imho, it's something helma stays even behind php (not because it wouldn't be possible by issueing an arbitrary sql statement but because it is not built-in the divine helma-like way.)
so the question might rather be: does helma 1.x deserve to lack this feature?

i second joshua's consideration that for making the xml db work equivalently it would take some really comprehensive work on the xml db code. of course, i'd love to see that - in fact, i'd love to see the xml db being queried like an sql one.
however, history tells me the xml db has not a very high priority in the development of helma, at least not anymore. (probably rightly so.)
